What is orthodontics?

Orthodontic treatment serves to correct malocclusion and the functiuon and aesthetics of teeth by the instructions of the orthodontist. The treatment can be started in the childhood or even in the adulthood, depending on the conditions of the gum and teeth. In some cases oral surgery intervention might be necessary before starting an orthodontic treatment but by the use of modern braces, tooth extraction is not as general as it used to be in a lot of cases.

When do we need to visit an orthodontist?

The aim of correcting misaligned teeth, dentures is keeping our teeth healthy, maintaining their proper functioning and resulting an aesthetic smile by the reposition of crooked teeth or a rotated tooth and dissolving malocclusion.

Why is orthodontic treatment important?

Orthodontic treatment is not only important to correct chewing or aesthetic functions. Misaligned teeth and occlusal problems can also be the reason of headaches, pain in the neck or in the spine, inflammation of mandibular joint or migraine.

Occlusal correction

In case of functional problems, it is often needed to correct position of jaws. This is usually taking place at the same time as the traditional orthodontic treatment but can be necessary also of its own.

During the occlusion and the chewing, teeth have to act the part of multiple functions, just like food processing and correct formation of speech sounds. Correct position of the teeth compared to each other, so examination of meeting points of chewing surfaces is being studied by the gnathology. In case of occlusal disfunctions, teeth of upper and lower jaws don’t meet properly so that the basic functions of the dentition are getting worse.

Malocclusion may generate problems with the temporomandibular joints. The uneven load might lead to inflammation, clicking joints or even dislocation so we would highly recommend its correction as soon as possible.

Types of occlusal problems

Upper teeth are usually covering 1.5-2 mm from the top of the teeth in the lower jaw when the mouth is closed. Compared to this normal state of occlusion, the following disfunctions (malocclusion) may appear:

Keresztharapás (alulharapás)

Lower denture is covering some of upper jaw’s teeth more than normal. This problem might appear at the front or either at the back of the denture, can involve one or more teeth. Besides the aesthetic problems, it can lead to different gum or periodontal problems. One of the most common type of crossbite is the bulldog bite when the disease appears at the front teeth.

Overbite (overjet)

Teeth of the upper jaw are covering more than normal. This is the most frequent irregularity. The origins of this malfuction are genetic: as we don’t need to chew food too much anymore, the anatomy of the jaw is degenerating . In some extreme cases the lower front teeth touch the gums behind the upper front teeth, causing gum problems and periodontal infections.

Protrusion (severe overjet)

Genetical susceptibility, bad habits or other health problems are playing a role in its development. These reasons can be late thumb sucking, swallowing disfunctions, genetic disorder, distortion of the jaw.

Nyitott harapás
Open bite

When the mouth is closed, the upper and lower jaws’ teeth don’t meet either at the front or at the back, there is space in between the two sides. When it concerns the front teeth, the reason of this disease can be late thumb sucking but also swallowing disorder (tongue comes forward when swallowing). By the back teeth the open bite is usually caused by the regular sucking of the tongue.

It appears when there is not “enough space” in the mouth. Either the jawbone is shorter or the teeth are wider than normal to fit or milk teeth are falling out late. It appears mostly by the front teeth, teeth are crowding onto each other or covering each other partially. There is a high risk of caries, extreme quantity of tartar or periodontal diseases.

Foghézag (diastema)

It is a gap in between the front teeth, mostly in the middle, its appearance is genetic or can be occured by the different number of teeth on the two sides. The gap is not only an aesthetic problem but can also influence speaking abilities.

Középvonal eltolódása
Dental midline irregularity

Midline of upper and lower denture is not fitting correctly. The denture seems to be irregular, teeth are not fitting when biting.

The process of orthodontic treatments

  1. Our colleagues make a panoramic X-ray and the orthodontist examines the dentition.
  2. Based on the X-ray and the examination our colleagues are providing you with a preliminary quote.
  3. After the quote has been accepted, a sideward X-ray is taken from the patient’s dentition so that the teeth position and the bite can be adjusted correctly.
  4. According to the final treatment plan, we are placing the brackets on the teeth, putting the band or the tube on the last molar teeth and the archwire is being placed at the center.
  5. During the controls, the orthodontist adjusts the appliance depending on the position of the teeth, and if necessary, changes the arch according to the final state to be achieved.
  6. When the teeth are arranged in place, the fixed orthodontic appliance is removed. At the same time, we make a dental imprint in order to create the removable orthodontic device.
  7. Removable night retainer must be worn upon the orthodontist’s instructions until the teeth are correctly fixed in the new position.

About modern orthodontics

Lots of people don’t dare to smile because of their teeth though orthodontics is becoming more and more popular among kids and adults, as well nowadays beacuse of our higher expectations in aesthetics and our health literacy. Now we know that the good, functional chewing is the first step to get to a healthy, adequate digestion and, of course, a beautiful smile is also part of the good looking. These results can be easily reached by the aid of orthodontics at any ages. A lots of types exist from the traditional metal braces to the „invisible” transparent retainers, anyone can find the one that fits the most.

Many people start orthodontic treatments in the adulthood because it has been a new technology earlier and/or wearing braces or retainers used to be uncomfortable so they had been removed before the end of the treatment. A lots of patients were wearing removable retainers that couldn’t resolve all type of problems at the end. The growing aesthetic needs and health literacy helps now the retention devices to expand and they have even become stylish.

Advantages of modern orthodontics

Orthodontic technics and devices can be more adjusted to individual needs

  • the size of orthodontics archwire can be adjusted to the size of the dental arch
  • the reduction of the size and the rounded, smooth edges of the brackets make patients feeling more comfortable
  • modern braces are straigthening teeth by using more gentle pressure than traditional braces so it comes with less pain
  • the new type removable retention devices are also a solution to many conditions when only fixed braces were effective previously

Orthodontic treatments come with less discomfort than before

  • by the use of the new technology that allows a wider expansion we can even avoid pulling out teeth in several cases when it used to be a necessary intervention previously
  • by the use of the self-ligating (sliding-door) technologies, the treatment period is getting shorter
  • in a lots of cases we are putting tubes on the molars instead of bands

Colour-fast orthodontic devices

New materials, just as brackets of crystalline sapphire ceramic appliances (equipped with special sliding-door locks that can be placed either on the inner or outer side of the teeth’s surface to help fixing the archwire) are having high colour-fast properties.

„Damon” technology

The Damon technology is a system found by an American doctor, Dr. Dwight Damon thus the essential is orthodontics using gentle pressure.

These appliances are functioning by the principles of „much less friction” compared to the traditional devices. So by the fasteners, and by the diminution of the friction, we can make moving teeth with much less forces even in adulthood. Thanks to the „biological forces”, the orthodontic treatment can be faster than with traditional devices. But what is more important, that it is less harmful for the teeth. In most of the cases tooth extraction and the using of fasteners and expanders can be avoided with the Damon system. This can make orthodontic treatments being more bearable.

The Damon Q metal braces

  • all benefits of permanently fixed braces
  • straigthening teeth by using gentle pressure
  • much less harmful for teeth
  • treatment is faster than with traditional orthodontic devices

Damon Clear

  • all benefits of fixed braces
  • tooth coloured, invisible
  • straigthening teeth by using gentle pressure
  • much less harmful for teeth
  • treatment is faster than with traditional orthodontic appliances

Orthodontic treatment by invisible aligners (Clear Aligner)

This is a new type of orthodontic treatment when we are using invisible aligners. This method can correct smaller, aesthetic misalignments, occlusal dysfunctions and functional disorders.

  • fully invisible
  • can be removed easily at any time
  • comfortable and unnoticed while wearing
  • easy to keep it clean

Paediatric orthodontics

Orthodontics started in childhood is still the most effective method to correct the position of the teeth. It is not necessary to wait for all the primary teeth (milk teeth) to fall out, kids can start wearing removable retainers even before. In this case, the parents’ responsibility is very high in order to respect the strict instructions. If the rules of the treatment are properly respected, the period of wearing fixed braces later on may be significantly shortened or even completely prevented.

Orthodontic treatment in childhood usually starts around 13-14 years old as the developpement of the jaws and the denture is then ready to adjust teeth for a lifetime. Children wear braces for 1-2 years as well, if necessary. Afterwards, night retainers are fixing the situation of the denture. It is really important to wear night retainer regularly to maintain the result of the previous treatment with the braces.

Children have to come for a check-up every 2-3 months with fixed braces.

Adult orthodontics

The old position on the question of orthodontics that says there’s no possiblity to have orthodontic treatment as an adult is not valid anymore. It’s never too late to have an orthodontic treatment. When it’s about adults, we can offer an aesthetic treatment that mainly concerns the improvement of their smile. It’s a little bit more complex to get a functional treatment when the main goal is to correct disfunctional occlusion, in thus cases orthodontic treatment is mainly needed because of teeth bending caused by missing teeth. These teeth must be replaced later on so such functional orthodontic treatment must be performed in cooperation with an implantologist.

By the help of orthodontics, we can correct occlusion and its related problems. When it’s about an adult patient, the first thing to consider is the aesthetics of the face and the smile that fits to the shape. In this matter, we choose the right orthodontic appliances together with the patient.

Orthodontic devices for adults:

  • tooth-coloured orthodontic braces that are using gentle pressure (Damon Clear)
  • metal, fixed braces, using gentle pressure (Damon Q)
  • invisible, transparent orthodontics appliances (Clear Aligner)
  • malocclusion-adjusting appliances and ancillary elements
