Dentures

What is denture and when is it recommended?

Dentures are an affordable method for our patients who misses all their teeth. In case if someone has own tooth, but not enough, partial denture is recommended.

Both the complete and the partial prostheses are designed to restore the chewing function and the aesthetic effect, as well. Proper chewing is a prerequisite for healthy digestion, without this factor digestive problems can arise, which can lead to further illnesses.

Aesthetic is a part of our everyday life, without regular look, our self-confidence can significantly reduce. However, a denture, which was made to our specifications can restore our confidence and gives a much younger look.

Removable dentures

Unlocked, removable denture is a traditional solution for replacing partial or complete dentures. The teeth are made of plastic in both prostheses. Porcelain teeth can not insert into dentures as they are too heavy, so it could pull the dental out of their place. In the case of partial dentures, the removable element can be attached to its own intact teeth, crowns and bridges in several ways.

One mode is the metal clip and the other is the hidden anchorage.

The disadvantage of the metal clip is its aesthetic aspect. As the bridge is made with the hidden anchorage, also the removable denture (so it is a combined work), it is aesthetically a much better solution than the metal clip. It stays also firmly in the denture.

It is not too comfortable to wear non-fixed dentures, as they can easily move, which can cause discomfort feelings during eating and talking. In addition, jawbone invasion can be experienced over time. This could be the consequent, as there are no root teeth in the bone that could stimulate chewing pressure into the bone (thus preventing bone loss). This bone loss could lead to a change of face-shape and to the displacement of the denture.

Overdenture

Overdenture is also a type of removable dentures. This is a cheaper alternative as  bridges attached to implants, and it is also recommended, if it is for any medical reason not possible to replace each tooth with implants.

The fixed denture is firmly attached to the tooth implant, which makes it much safer and more comfortable than the non-fixed denture. It’s also smaller than the traditional prosthesis, which makes it much easier to wear and use every day.

Why is overdenture recommended?

The prosthesis fixed to the implant can restore the original strength and quality of chewing, so denture glue becomes unnecessary. In addition to supporting healthy digestion, the wearer gets also a natural look, not to mention there won’t be any problems with talking. Fixed dentures do not irritate gum, so it is much more comfortable to wear.

Due to the implants, it can prevent premature aging and loss of facial character lines – as dental implants minimize bone loss. It is a really long-lasting, stable denture solution.

Am I convenient to have fixed dentures?

Any person with proper oral hygiene can be considered suitable for this intervention. However, before this treatment, it is recommended to assess the patient’s overall health and everyday habits.

The treatment requires sufficient amount of dense in the jaw bone, which can be controlled by an X-ray or a CT scan. Based on the diagnosis, the dentist may decide whether bone is sufficient is ideal, or bone replacement is needed.

However, there may be cases where implants are contraindicated, such as periodontitis, hard smoking or bruxism. These should be solved with appropriate treatment or it is advisable to stop smoking before and after surgery.

Types of overdentures

There are a many prosthetic methods available, from which we can offer you the right solution at our clinic. Depending on the health condition, two tooth implants in the lower jaw could be enough to hold the denture. In case of the upper jaw, 4 or 6 artificial tooth roots are recommended.

Dental implants can be combined in variety ways. One method is the metal bridge and the other is the local mount. In the last case, dentist places small balls on the top of the implants that snap into the prosthesis and keep the denture in the right place.

Procedure of treatment

The procedure is divided into two large parts.

First phase

During the first steps of treatment, the dentist pulls out the teeth, (before the dental implants) if necessary and after that they can be implanted. The healing time of the implants is approx. 4-6 months, during this time the tooth root is incorporated into the bone.

Second stage

After this time, healing twirls are placed into the jaw. After the teeth in the wax test, the dental technician prepares the dentures. Finally the cosmetic dentist puts on and provides you toothpaste and maintenance of your mouth hygiene.

What should we pay attention?

Overdentures are essentially designed to be worn for 24 hours a day, but these prostheses should take regularly for cleaning. Keeping the gum clean and healthy is very important for the stability and longevity of implants.

It is also recommended to clean the denture on daily basis. Wash the prosthesis during cleaning and the surrounding area of the implants with the floss to remove the plaque from the implants, use mouthwash and also rinse the dentures.
